Apple announced yesterday that AppleCare One is finally coming to the UK, and I think it's one of those quietly useful changes that a lot of the people I look after will benefit from. If you've ever found yourself trying to remember which of your devices still has AppleCare+ and which one ran out last year, this is the fix for exactly that problem.
What it is
AppleCare One is a single monthly plan that covers up to three Apple devices at once. Rather than having a separate policy for your iPhone, another for your iPad and a third for your Mac, each with its own price and its own renewal date, you have one plan and one price, and everything sits together in one place.
It costs £16.99 a month for three devices, and if you want to add more than that, each extra one is £4.99 a month.
What's covered
The cover itself is the same as AppleCare+, it's just pooled across all of your devices rather than tied to one. So you get unlimited repairs for accidental damage, which means cracked screens, spills and drops, along with battery service when your battery eventually needs replacing, 24/7 priority access to Apple's support team, and repairs with genuine Apple parts at Apple Stores and authorised service providers.
Theft and loss cover is available as an optional add-on for iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch, covering up to two incidents a year with an excess to pay when you claim.
The bit most people will miss
This is the part I'd want you to notice, because it's the thing that makes AppleCare One different. You can add devices you already own, not just new ones. Anything up to four years old qualifies, as long as it's in good condition and signed in to your Apple Account, and headphones need to be under a year old.
That's a real change from how AppleCare+ has always worked, where you had a short window after buying something to add cover and after that you were out of luck. With AppleCare One, the iPad you bought back in 2023 and never got round to protecting can go straight on the plan.
When and how
It's available in the UK from Tuesday 4 August, and you can sign up at apple.com, in an Apple Store, or directly on your iPhone, iPad or Mac if you already have AppleCare+ on one of them. Apple says the plan can save you up to £11.48 a month compared with three separate AppleCare+ plans, which adds up over a year.
Is it worth it?
If you have three Apple devices and you'd have bought AppleCare+ for at least two of them anyway, then yes, the maths works in your favour and having everything on one plan is simply easier to keep track of. If you have one iPhone and nothing else, the standard AppleCare+ plan for that device is still likely to be the better option, so it's worth comparing the two before you switch anything.
One thing I'd gently point out, because people do get the two confused. AppleCare covers the hardware, and it does that very well. What it doesn't cover is the questions that fill my inbox every week: why the photos aren't syncing, how to move everything across to a new Mac, or what on earth that pop-up means. That side of things is what I'm here for, and it doesn't change.
